β Risks & How to Handle Them
πͺ¨ Landslides
Common between BeshamβDasu and on Skardu road. Usually cleared within hours. If blocked, wait patiently β don't try to go around. Check road status via local WhatsApp groups or ask at hotels.
β Snow & Weather
April can still have snowfall at high altitudes (Deosai, Khunjerab). Check weather before heading out each day. If there's fresh snow on Deosai, skip it β not worth the risk.
π Altitude Sickness
Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath. Usually hits above 3,500m (Deosai, Khunjerab). Take Diamox preventively. Drink lots of water. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen.
π΅ No Mobile Signal
Signal drops after Besham. Spotty through Chilas, Skardu, Hunza. Jazz has the best coverage in northern areas. Download everything offline before leaving Islamabad.
π Breakdowns
Carry spare tyre, basic tools. If stuck, locals are incredibly helpful. Mechanics exist in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas but parts for Tucson may not be available β carry essentials.

π€ Cultural Tips for First-Time Visitors
People are incredibly hospitable β don't be surprised if strangers invite you for tea. It's genuine.
Dress modestly β especially women. Long sleeves and covering legs is respectful and appreciated.
Ask before photographing people β especially women and children. Most men are happy to pose.
Hunza is the most liberal area β Ismaili community, women are active in public life, more relaxed dress code.
Learn a few words β "Shukriya" (thank you), "Assalam o Alaikum" (greeting) go a long way.
No alcohol β Gilgit-Baltistan is dry. Don't carry or ask for it.
Friday is rest day β some shops/services close for Friday prayers (12β2 PM).
πΆ SIM Card & Mobile Network Guide
Mobile coverage is the #1 thing first-timers get wrong. Here's the reality:
Network
Coverage
Verdict
Jazz
Best in GB β works in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza (spotty), Chilas
β Recommended
Zong
Decent on KKH, some Hunza coverage
β Backup option
Telenor
Drops after Mansehra, almost nothing in GB
β Avoid
Ufone
Similar to Telenor β very weak in north
β Avoid
π‘ Buy a Jazz SIM in Bahawalpur or Islamabad before heading north. Get the weekly data package (15-20 GB for ~500 PKR). Even Jazz will have dead zones between BeshamβChilas and parts of Skardu road β but it's the best you'll get.
π΅ Dead Zones (No Signal at All)
Besham β Dasu β Chilas (long stretches)
Jaglot β Skardu road (most of it)
Deosai (entire park β zero signal)
Sost β Khunjerab (after Sost checkpoint)
π‘ Temperature Guide β April
The temperature difference across this trip is extreme. Pack layers.

πΊ Offline Maps Download Guide
You'll lose signal for hours at a time. Download these areas in Google Maps before leaving Islamabad:
How to Download
Google Maps β Your profile icon β Offline maps β Select your own map β Draw the region β Download
Areas to Download
Islamabad to Mansehra β covers Hazara Motorway exit
Mansehra to Chilas β critical, covers entire construction zone
Chilas to Skardu β the JaglotβSkardu road
Skardu city + surroundings β lakes, Deosai entry
Chilas to Gilgit to Hunza β KKH corridor
Hunza to Khunjerab β includes Passu, Sost
π± Each map area uses 100β300 MB. Total: ~1β1.5 GB. Download on WiFi at your Islamabad hotel the night before Day 2. Also download any music/podcasts β no streaming in the mountains.
β½ Fuel Station Guide
Fuel stations thin out dramatically after Islamabad. Here are the reliable ones:
Location
Reliability
Action
Bahawalpur (start)
β Full service
Start with a full tank
Motorway service areas
β Reliable
Top up if below 3/4
Mansehra
β Multiple stations
Fill up β last easy stop
Besham
β PSO/Shell available
MUST fill here β critical
Chilas
β Available but pricey
Top up, +10-15 Rs/L premium
Gilgit
β Multiple stations
Fill up for Skardu or Hunza leg
Skardu
β Available
Fill before Deosai day
Aliabad (Hunza)
β One station
Top up for Khunjerab trip
Sost
β Unreliable
Don't depend on this
β½ Golden rule: Never let the tank drop below half. The Tucson's tank is ~62L. Full tank gives you ~620-740 km. Always know where the next fill-up is.
π Mountain Driving Tips (First-Timers)
If you've never driven mountain roads before, read this carefully:
β¬ Going Downhill
Use engine braking β shift to lower gear (L or 2). Don't ride the brake pedal for long stretches or it'll overheat and fail.
Tap brakes intermittently β short firm presses, not continuous pressing.
If brakes feel spongy β stop immediately, let them cool for 10 minutes.
β¬ Going Uphill
Maintain momentum β don't stop mid-climb if possible.
Use lower gear β let the engine rev higher rather than lugging it in high gear.
π Blind Corners
Honk before every blind turn β this is not rude, it's survival. Everyone does it.
Stay on your side β trucks will come around corners using the full road.
Slow to 20 km/h at blind curves.
π Dealing with Trucks
Give way to uphill traffic β the vehicle going uphill has right of way.
Pull over for oncoming trucks β they can't stop easily on mountain roads.
Don't tailgate β rocks fall from truck beds.
πͺ¨ Landslide Zones
Don't stop under cliffs β pass quickly through marked zones.
Keep windows up in rock fall areas.
If road is blocked β park safely, wait. Locals and army usually clear within hours.
π΅ Entertainment for Long Drives
You'll have 5+ hours of zero signal most driving days. Download everything before leaving Islamabad:
π₯ Download Before You Go
Spotify playlists β download 10+ hours of music for offline play
Podcasts β great for long straight motorway stretches. Download 15-20 episodes.
Audiobooks β a full audiobook can cover an entire driving day
Movies/shows on tablet β for passengers during boring motorway sections
Card games / Ludo β for hotel evenings with no WiFi
πΆ Suggested Road Trip Vibes
Mountain morning drives β Coke Studio classics, soft Sufi music (Abida Parveen, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)
Motorway cruising β upbeat playlists, Bollywood road trip songs
π Bring a good Bluetooth speaker for hotel rooms. Some mountain hotels have zero entertainment. Your own speaker + downloaded music = saved evenings.

π· Top Photo Spots (Don't Miss)
Nanga Parbat from Raikot Bridge β early morning, clear sky. The "Killer Mountain" with fresh snow.
Upper Kachura Lake β the crystal-clear water reflection shot. Use polarizing filter if you have one.
Sheosar Lake, Deosai β the flat plains reflecting the sky. Wide-angle lens essential.
Eagle's Nest, Hunza β panoramic valley with Rakaposhi. Best at sunset.
Passu Cones β the cathedral peaks with KKH road. Frame with the highway in foreground.
Attabad Lake β turquoise water from the road above. Or from the boat for water-level shots.
Khunjerab Gate β the classic Pakistan-China border photo. Stand at the marker.
π± Phone Camera Tips
Clean your lens β dust is everywhere in the mountains
Use HDR mode β high contrast between bright sky and dark valleys
Panorama mode β valleys are too wide for normal shots
Keep phone warm β cold batteries die fast. Keep phone in jacket pocket between shots
Take videos too β the movement of clouds over peaks is magical and photos can't capture it
π You're all set! This trip will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. The north of Pakistan is raw, beautiful, and humbling. Drive safe, respect the mountains, and soak it all in. Have an amazing journey!
