💡 The entire road is fully paved and excellent. This is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Your Tucson will glide through.
📍 Stops Along the Way
🏔 Passu Cones
Dramatic pointed peaks that look like cathedral spires. One of the most photographed spots in all of Pakistan. Stop on the KKH for photos — visible from the road.
🌉 Passu Suspension Bridge
The famous "most dangerous bridge in the world" (it's safe, just thrilling). Wooden planks over a rushing glacier river. Walk across for an adrenaline rush and incredible photos. Free.
🏛 Sost — Last Town
Border check post. You may need to register at the checkpoint. Keep your CNICs ready for all 5 passengers. Good idea to use the restroom here — nothing after this point.
🇵🇰🇨🇳 Khunjerab Pass (4,693m)
The grand finale. A massive gate marking the Pakistan-China border. Snow-covered mountains all around. The air is thin — walk slowly. Take photos at the famous border marker. You cannot cross into China without a visa, but the gate itself is the attraction.
🏔 Altitude Warning: Khunjerab is at 4,693m — higher than any European mountain. You may experience headache, dizziness, shortness of breath. Move slowly, don't run. Take Diamox if symptoms appear. Carry water.
📋 Permit & Checkpoint Info
You'll pass through checkpoints on the way to Khunjerab. Here's what to expect:
Checkpoint
Location
What's Needed
Sost Check Post
~65 km from Karimabad
CNICs of all passengers. Vehicle registration. They'll log your details.
Dih Check Post
~30 km before Khunjerab
Same CNICs check. May ask about return time.
Khunjerab Gate
At the border
No crossing without visa. Photos allowed at the gate.
📝 No special permit is required for Pakistani citizens to visit Khunjerab Pass — just valid CNICs. Foreign nationals need a NOC from the Ministry of Interior. The checkpoints are routine; be polite, show IDs, and you'll pass through in 5 minutes.
📸 Photography Tips for This Day
Passu Cones — best shot from the KKH bridge with the river and peaks. Early morning light is ideal.
Passu Suspension Bridge — video works better than photos. Walk slowly, film the planks and river below.
Snow walls on Khunjerab road — in April, snow walls can be 6-10 feet high on both sides. Drive through slowly and photograph from the car.
Khunjerab Gate — everyone gets the group photo at the gate. Also walk 50m past it for the open valley shot with no crowds.
Keep batteries warm — at -5°C, phone and camera batteries drain 3x faster. Keep them in your jacket pocket.
