Day 2 — Islamabad → Chilas

The longest and toughest driving day. Welcome to the mountains.

📏 ~420 km ⏱ 10–12 hours ⚠ Mixed Roads

🚨 CRITICAL: Leave Islamabad by 6:00 AM sharp. You MUST reach Chilas before sunset (~6:45 PM in April). This is non-negotiable — mountain roads have zero lighting and no barriers.

🛣 Route Breakdown

⚠ Road Reality Check (April 2026)

This section is under-reported online. Here's the truth:

Besham to Dasu — Dasu Dam construction zone. Expect diversions, dust, single-lane traffic with flagmen. Can add 1–2 hours to your trip.
Dasu to Chilas — Narrow KKH along the Indus River. Beautiful but dangerous. Falling rocks are common. Keep windows up.
Mobile Signal — Drops completely after Besham. Download everything offline before leaving Islamabad.
Petrol — Last reliable station at Besham. Fill up there.

⛽ FUEL UP at Besham. Chilas has fuel but it's expensive and sometimes unavailable.

Besham — roadside dhabas. Try trout fish if available.

🏨 Where to Stay in Chilas

Shangrila Hotel Chilas

Right on the highway. Clean, reliable. ~10,000 PKR for 2 rooms.

Panorama Hotel

Budget option. Basic but safe. ~8,000 PKR for 2 rooms.

📍 Both hotels are on the main KKH road in Chilas town. Easy to find.

🌙 Evening in Chilas

Rest & recover — This is the toughest driving day. You'll be exhausted. Prioritize sleep.
Stargazing — Zero light pollution. Step outside the hotel for incredible stars. Milky Way is often visible.
Chilas Bazaar — Small market near the hotels. Walk around to stretch legs. Pick up dry fruits for the trip.
Early sleep — Tomorrow's drive to Skardu is technical. Be rested by 9 PM.
